Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
Research topics include:
- developing technologies for program synthesis or induction, using deep learning and other machine learning methods, with a focus on the automated development of web pages;
- deep learning for processing medical images;
- object reconstruction with deep learning, with a focus on museum artifacts;
- new learning rules for spiking neural networks; components of such a learning rule have been implemented in Intel’s Loihi neuromorphic chip.
Biospeleology
Our scientists studied:
- disentangling the diversity patterns of the cave microbiome on different substrates and in different microclimatic conditions (e.g. different temperatures), and identifying the possible commonalities with surface microbiomes (e.g. soil, water);
- decoding gut microbiome diversity in oligotrophic and chemoautotrophic cave representatives at different food levels;
- parallelisms and convergences between cave invertebrates and their gut symbionts as an adaptation to low food;
- the resistome analysis by identifying new cave bacteria with natural antibiotic resistance and menaquinones (MK, vitamin K) synthesis, and experiments on their possible use for human health.
Nonlinear Science
Marius F. Danca studies continuous/non-smooth chaotic dynamical systems of integer/fractional order.
Neuroscience
Research topics included the dynamics of neural circuits, methods for analyzing brain recordings, the mouse cortical connectome, and molecular basis of autism.
Social Sciences
Franz Buhr explores the ways coffee links high-amenity urban centres in the Global North to transformations in land use in rural peripheries in the Global South.
